In addition the scheduled activities below, the Little Naturalist Area will host complimentary face painting from noon to 5pm.

Tree Identification Walk 12:00 – 1:00

Come and learn about some of the mightiest, most beautiful trees in our area! We will learn how to identify leaves, bark, and acorns. After a brief lesson, we are going to go on a walk around UNC Asheville's campus and put our knowledge to the test while enjoying being outside in nature.

Foraging and Seed Planting Workshop 1:00 – 2:00

We will be learning about some of the edible plants in our region. From the tart scent of sassafras root to the sheer abundance of clover we will smell, hold, and look at some of the edible plants unique to our part of the world! Afterwards, children will have the opportunity to plant some of their own edible plants: beans, greens and cucumbers with seeds donated from Sow True Seed and soil donated from Danny's Dumpster, and take them home.

A Walk Through Time- Botanical Gardens Tour 2:00 – 3:00

Learn and explore the natural history of the Southern Appalachians, an area unique for being remarkably biodiverse and geologically fascinating. This 30 minute educational tour will be led by Suzanne Wodek, a Botanical Gardens volunteer. We hope to see you there!

Nature Mandalas 3:00 – 4:00

Get creative with flowers, stones, twigs, leaves, and pinecones. We will be making nature mandalas out of found materials which children can either take home or leave for others to enjoy. Everyone will have the opportunity to touch and create with a variety of natural materials.

Five Senses Meditation 4:00 – 5:00

In this five senses meditation, we will be spending time fully present with each of our senses. In being able to fully feel what we receive every day, we can learn to derive great pleasure from the simplest things in life. We will offer natural objects to touch, smell, listen to, look at, and even taste!
